Next to Normal

July 30-31, 2021

"I don't need a life that's normal. that's way too far away.
but something next to normal would be ok."

Next to Normal was  is a rock musical that follows the Goodman family as they grapple with the effects of Diana’s bipolar disorder, exploring themes of mental illness, grief, and family dynamics. The show ultimately won a Pulitzer Prize and three Tony Awards. It also presented the opportunity for PVTC to tackle a unique show with heavy subject matter, along with a ton of heart.

The story of PVTC’S production of

NEXT TO NORMAL

“I am the one who knows you. I am the one who cares. I am the one who’s always been there.”

Director Morgan Larsen had an itch to take on this show since it blew her away when she first saw it ten years earlier. The incredible music was matched only by the heart of the story, where the show’s writers tackled grief and mental health in a way that showed clearly how wide-reaching their effects could be. The story of Diana and her family is one that needs to be told, and we were happy to do it. This was one of the show-in-a-week shows that PVTC has turned to many times. While taking on such a large project in just one week is daunting to say the least, it allows cast and crew from all walks of life to join us. The set for this show was relatively simplistic in design, but featured some incredibly realistic props (refrigerator, keyboard, and even a toilet) for added realism, as well as lighted “windows,” to represent the family’s home, hung askew as a sign of the distress inside.
